12.5 Miles Today

By John Stetson - May 5th, 2008

Via Satellite Phone - LISTEN IN!

Hello, this is John Stetson and Ed Viesturs out on Baffin Island. It's May 5th and we went 12.5 miles today. We had a great day. We started out this morning after a nice rest day yesterday. It was a beautiful, sunny day and we took a hike and really enjoyed it. Got some rest and a few things repaired. And we left this morning and it was another, what seemed to be a start to a nice day and yeah haw, the wind hit us and hit us hard and made it a real fun day. 12.5 miles that we traveled is the farthest we traveled on this journey and a big part of that reason it because we usually travel an hour and then stop for a drink and a small break and then we travel another hour and so on. But today it was blowing so hard, we couldn't really stop. We were traveling on the windswept areas up here. All the areas, of course, are windswept. Many places you can't travel at all on snow because it's just pure rock. The lakes, the rivers are often scrubbed clean of snow. The blue ice that we were camped on yesterday. And we were traveling on a great deal of that today. The wind was catching our polks and spinning us around like tops. On a number of occasions Ed passed me going backward with his polk in the lead. It was such an amazing, it was Keystone Cops all over again. Sorry to say, might have something to do with our mental state, but we really, really had fun doing it today. It was so different from what we've been doing. Last year on the expedition, the Docet expedition on Baffin that Ed and I met, we had coined a term called "Articky" and Articky weather was a perfect description for today. It was very cold and blowing. Luckily most of the time the wind was at our back and so we were able to enjoy it and make some good progress. Right now we are in our sleeping bags, curled up, hidden behind a rock. The wind is still buffeting the tent. We're just enjoying our snug tent here and amazed at how a little piece of nylon can change what is a rather difficult situation to a nice warm cozy . . . (transmission ends)
